What is JSON?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data-interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write, and easy for machines to parse and generate.

JSON is built on two structures:

  • • Objects - a collection of key/value pairs wrapped in { }
  • • Arrays - an ordered list of values wrapped in [ ]

Valid value types: string, number, object, array, true, false, null.

Common JSON Errors

Trailing commas
{"a": 1,}  ← not allowed
Unquoted keys
{key: "value"}  ← keys must be quoted
Single quotes
{'key': 'val'}  ← use double quotes
Missing commas
{"a":1 "b":2}  ← comma between pairs
