Base Systems Explained

Binary (Base 2)
Digits: 0, 1. Used by all computers and digital systems at the hardware level.
Octal (Base 8)
Digits: 0-7. Used in Unix file permissions (e.g. chmod 755).
Decimal (Base 10)
Digits: 0-9. The everyday number system.
Hexadecimal (Base 16)
Digits: 0-9 + A - F. Used in colors (#FF5733), memory addresses, and encoding.

Tip

One hex digit = 4 binary digits (a "nibble"). Two hex digits = one byte (8 bits). So FF = 11111111 = 255.
