Name | Amount | Unit (leave unit blank for countable items like eggs)

Scaled to servings
Scale factor: ×

How to Use

  1. 1

Enter the original number of servings the recipe was written for

  2. 2

Enter how many servings you want to make

  3. 3

Fill in each ingredient with its amount and unit, then click Scale Recipe

  4. 4

All ingredient amounts are multiplied by the scale factor (desired ÷ original)

Formula

Scale Factor = Desired Servings ÷ Original Servings
Scaled Amount = Original Amount × Scale Factor

For example, scaling a 4-serving recipe to 6 servings gives a scale factor of 1.5. Every ingredient is multiplied by 1.5.

FAQ

Basic scaling works for most baking recipes. However, leavening agents (baking powder, baking soda, yeast) may not scale linearly - use about 75% of the calculated amount when doubling or tripling. Pan size and baking time will also need adjusting.
Scale spices to about 75% of the calculated amount and taste as you go - flavor compounds concentrate non-linearly. Strong spices like chili and salt especially benefit from starting at 75% and adjusting.
0.333 cups is approximately ⅓ cup. 0.25 cup = ¼ cup, 0.5 cup = ½ cup, 0.75 cup = ¾ cup. For very small amounts, convert to tablespoons (1 cup = 16 tablespoons) or teaspoons (1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons).

Pro Tip

When doubling a recipe that uses a pan, you may need two pans of the same size rather than a larger pan - oven cooking times are based on depth, not total volume.
