Detailed Instructions

  1. Enter your text - Type the word or name you want your child to practice. The preview updates automatically as you type.
  2. Select a paper size - Choose US Letter (8.5 × 11") for North America or A4 (210 × 297 mm) for international standard paper.
  3. Pick the number of rows - More rows mean more practice lines per page. We recommend 8 rows for most children. Use 6 rows for younger kids who need larger letters.
  4. Choose letter case - Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word. UPPERCASE is great for beginners. lowercase works well for children moving to standard writing.
  5. Adjust dot size - Smaller dots create a finer, more challenging tracing pattern. Larger dots are easier to see and follow, ideal for younger children.
  6. Toggle options - Enable or disable guide lines, row numbers, and the solid model row to suit your child's level.
  7. Download the PDF - Click the "Download PDF" button. The file will save to your device's default download folder.

Paper Size US Letter / A4 US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) is standard in the US and Canada. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is used in most other countries.
Number of Rows 6 - 10 rows Fewer rows = larger letters (better for younger children). More rows = smaller letters with more repetition.
Letter Case Title / UPPER / lower / As Typed Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word. UPPERCASE makes all letters capitals. lowercase makes all letters small.
Dot Size Small / Medium / Large / Extra Large Small (fine dots) is more challenging. Extra Large is easiest to see, ideal for beginners.
Guide Lines On / Off Shows four handwriting guide lines per row: ascender, midline (dashed), baseline, and descender.
Row Numbers On / Off Small dots on the left margin indicate the row number.
First Row Solid On / Off When enabled, the first row shows solid text as a visual model. Remaining rows show dotted tracing.

Tips for Parents & Teachers

Getting the Best Results

  • Start with their name. Children are most motivated to write their own name.
  • Use fewer rows for beginners. Six rows with larger letters are less overwhelming for a child just starting to write.
  • Choose "Extra Large" dots for ages 3-4. Bigger dots are easier to see and trace with chunky pencils or crayons.
  • Turn on the solid first row. A solid model gives the child a clear reference for what each letter should look like.
  • Print multiple copies. Repetition is key to muscle memory.
  • Try different cases. Start with uppercase letters, then move to title case and lowercase as the child progresses.
  • Praise effort, not perfection. Focus on the process of tracing rather than how neat the result looks.

For Classroom Use

  • Personalized name worksheets - Create a unique worksheet for each student with their name.
  • Sight word practice - Generate worksheets for common sight words like "the," "and," "is," "was."
  • Weekly spelling words - Create one worksheet per spelling word for homework practice.
  • Letter of the week - Type a single letter for focused practice.
  • Holiday & seasonal words - "pumpkin" in October, "snowman" in December, "spring" in March.

When enabled, the first row shows the text in a solid (filled-in) style as a visual model. The remaining rows use the dotted tracing style for the child to practice. This is especially helpful for children seeing a new word for the first time.
The sky-blue guide lines mimic traditional handwriting ruled paper: top line (ascender) - tall letters like b, d, h reach here; middle dashed line (midline) - marks x-height; baseline - where most letters sit; descender line - letters like g, j, p, y drop below here.
