Calculate how many boxes of hardwood, laminate, or vinyl plank flooring you need. Enter your room area, box coverage, and waste factor for an accurate total.
Check the box label - typically 15-25 sq ft per box
Measure the room length and width in feet
Find the box coverage on the flooring package label (usually printed as "X sq ft per box")
Choose a waste factor - 10% is standard for a straight-lay rectangular room
Click Calculate to see the number of boxes to purchase
The room area is multiplied by the waste factor, then divided by the coverage per box and rounded up to the nearest whole box.
Bedroom: 12 × 10 ft, 20 sq ft/box, 10% waste
120 sq ft × 1.10 = 132 sq ft ÷ 20 = 6.6 → 7 boxes
Result: 7 boxes
Open-plan living/dining: 25 × 18 ft, 22 sq ft/box, 10% waste
450 sq ft × 1.10 = 495 sq ft ÷ 22 = 22.5 → 23 boxes
Result: 23 boxes
Hallway with alcove: 18 × 4 ft, 15 sq ft/box, 15% waste
72 sq ft × 1.15 = 82.8 sq ft ÷ 15 = 5.52 → 6 boxes
Result: 6 boxes
Acclimate hardwood and laminate flooring in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This lets the planks adjust to the room's temperature and humidity, preventing buckling and gaps after installation.
