The alternating caps pattern is widely known as "Mocking SpongeBob" text, named after the image of SpongeBob SquarePants standing in a hunched, mocking pose.
The meme became widely known around 2017 when a screenshot from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Little Yellow Book" circulated online. In it, SpongeBob mimics someone in a condescending, child-like manner.
Internet users paired the image with alternating-caps text to imply that the quoted statement is silly, sarcastic, or not worth taking seriously - as if repeating it in a mocking tone.
The pattern spread rapidly across Twitter, Reddit, and Discord and remains one of the most recognizable text-based memes today.
Non-letter characters (spaces, punctuation, numbers) are preserved exactly as typed across all modes.
