Keep it simple. Favicons are tiny - a single bold letter or symbol reads much better than complex artwork.
Use high contrast between text and background so the icon reads clearly at 16px.
For logos, upload a square PNG with a transparent background for best results.
Rounded and circle shapes look great on iOS home screens and Android launchers.
Place the favicon.ico in your site root - browsers fetch it automatically even without a <link> tag.
