Data Storage Reference

Decimal (SI)

1 KB= 1,000 bytes
1 MB= 1,000 KB
1 GB= 1,000 MB
1 TB= 1,000 GB

Binary (IEC)

1 KiB= 1,024 bytes
1 MiB= 1,024 KiB
1 GiB= 1,024 MiB
1 byte= 8 bits

FAQ

Drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000 GB), but operating systems often use binary (1 TiB = 1,024 GiB). A 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GiB in your OS. Some space is also used by the file system.
KB (kilobyte) is 1,000 bytes (decimal/SI standard). KiB (kibibyte) is 1,024 bytes (binary/IEC standard). The difference grows at larger scales: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, but 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Quick Tip

1 byte = 8 bits. Storage is measured in bytes, while network speeds are often measured in bits per second (Mbps).
