Formula

Bricks = Wall Area (sq in) ÷ (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar)

Standard US modular brick is 8 × 2¼ inches with a ⅜-inch mortar joint. This yields about 7 bricks per square foot of wall face. Adjust brick size and mortar joint for other brick types.

FAQ

A standard US modular brick is 8 inches long × 2¼ inches tall × 3⅝ inches deep. UK standard bricks are 215 × 65 × 102.5 mm.
Allow 5% for straight walls and 10% or more for walls with openings, curves, or complex patterns that require more cutting.

Pro Tip

Subtract window and door openings from your wall area before calculating. A standard door is about 21 sq ft and a standard window is about 12 sq ft.
